<b><span style="font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;">Abstract: </span></b><span style="font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;">Hydraulic redistribution (HR) is a natural adaptation mechanism that plant roots transfer soil moisture
from wet soil layers to drier ones during night time when transpiration becomes low. While HR has attracted much research attention in global water circulation, limited research has been conducted to elucidate its role in nutrient cycling and uptake. In this
presentation, I will present our recent findings of HR-aided plant self-regulation of water and nutrient availability in soil systems from a greenhouse experiment. Our results demonstrate that: (1) plants are capable of integrating multi-level information
of local environmental conditions and providing complex feedbacks, e.g. initialization of HR, to sustain environments with limited resources; (2) heterogeneity in rhizosphere nutrient and moisture distribution significantly regulates plant growth behaviors
and HR occurrences through changing root architecture, morphology and rhizosphere soil aggregation. The presentation will welcome and promote discussions from different scientific disciplines and perspectives focusing on the mechanistic understanding of plant
root plasticity and ecological implications in ecosystem services management.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<b><span style="font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;">Bio: </span></b><span style="font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;">Jing Yan is an environmental soil physicist by training. He is broadly interested in developing basic and
applied research of soil physics to promote food, water security and healthy ecosystem services. He gained his Ph.D. degree in Plant and Soil Sciences from University of Delaware in 2016. After graduation he joined University of California, Merced, for his
postdoctoral training. His postdoctoral research is under the direction of Dr. Teamrat Ghezzehei, mainly focusing on rhizosphere nutrient and water dynamics. In addition to performing research, at the University of California, Merced, he actively promotes
an interdisciplinary research community through serving as Enviro-Lunch seminar-series organizer. He is also currently elected as the postdoctoral fellow in Environmental Systems, Ecology, & Evolution, and serves as an ambassador to unite different scientific
disciplines and graduate programs.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
