Environmental DNA may serve as a non-invasive tool to study biodiversity patterns and to monitor species of interest. The CALeDNA network aims to explore all of California’s biodiversity across diverse biomes, including desert, forest,
chaparral, grassland, and littoral zone. I will present some of the biodiversity patterns we are recovering from two of our studies: (1) a coastal transect along a 1200 km latitudinal gradient from which we are comparing marine and terrestrial habitats; and
(2) community science collection of soils at the UC Vernal Pool and Grassland Reserve to identify vernal pool biodiversity.

of deep-sea black corals. At the Dawson and Sexton labs, Ruiz-Ramos work on environmental DNA (eDNA) to characterize biodiversity patterns of plants, animals and microbes along latitudinal transects and ephemeral habitats.
