Active floodplains can store large amounts of organic carbon (SOC) in subsoils, and our study focussed on the assessment of SOC pools associated with alluvial floodplain soils that were affected by human-induced
changes and in situ SOC mineralisation due to land use change. Our test site at the Cosumnes River provides a unique opportunity to distinguish natural and human-induced effects, because the periods of increased sedimentation and land use change are well documented,
and both started in the 1850s. <span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:#222222">

Using different methodological approaches (analysis of stable carbon isotopic ratios, radiocarbon dating and total mercury analysis), our results underline the importance of within catchment sediment dynamics
that need to be taken into account in regional to global SOC budgets. Historic data give evidence that large amounts of sediment were transported into the floodplains of most rivers of the Central Valley and deposited over organically rich topsoil, which promoted
the stabilization of SOC. <span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:#222222">

In addition to soil carbon dynamics, I am going to present preliminary results about bacterial community structure and the strong effect of soil depth on the diversity. Moreover, we examined several metrics of
restoration benefits to investigate the variation with restoration age and restoration method. Our results suggest that a combination of planting and enhanced floodplain connectivity will be most successful in restoring riparian benefits.<span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:#222222">
