human populations and economic activities across the world, but there is still
room to improve our knowledge of the stores and fluxes of freshwater. Different
activities consume water at different rates and rely on different resources and
thus have a different "footprint" in regard to their water demand.
However, the water footprint of different activities differs depending on the
region where the activity and the time when the activity occurred. I will present
my work on a water-balance model that evaluates the demand-side volumes of
water required to enable agricultural production in the Central Valley of
California. These water footprints represent an efficiency metric and can be
used to highlight similarities and differences among the diverse uses of
freshwater resources in the state. The model is based on gridded data inputs
from remotely sensed satellite products, and utilizes entirely free and open
source frameworks to present the method in a manner that can be reproduced
across different time periods, regions, and future climate scenarios.
