proxy records in geologic deep-time requires accounting not only for major
climate changes but also modification of topography through tectonic processes.
Stable isotope records from authigenic lake carbonates serve as powerful
integrators of regional environmental conditions. In central Utah, Paleo-lake
Flagstaff occupied the foreland basin fronting the now-destroyed Sevier
Highlands during the early Eocene (~50 Myr ago), while middle Miocene (13-5 Myr
ago) lakes in the Ouarzazate Basin of Morocco received inputs from the High
Atlas. I show stable isotope records from these two areas that constrain their
