Dr. Robin Trayler
Abstract. Stable isotope analysis has become the method of choice for many studies investigating the paleoecology and paleoclimate of fossil mammal faunas. In this talk I will highlight the past 10 years of my research investigating the ecology of fossil mammals throughout the Cenozoic. First, I will present a case study from the Miocene (~17 million years ago), Argentina. Fossil rich sediments span the initiation of the mid-Miocene climatic optimum, the most recent period of greenhouse conditions in the Cenozoic. My results show progressive aridification of Patagonia with increased temperatures and decreased precipitation. Second, I will move closer to home and discuss the ecology fossil mammals from central California during the Pleistocene (Last ice age) including fossils from the Merced area. These data reveal that California had a dynamic ecosystem during the last ice age with many species of large carnivores and herbivores in fierce competition. Finally, I will highlight my ongoing research and the role I play in enabling students and faculty research success at UC Merced.
About Dr. Robin Trayler. Dr. Robin Trayler grew up in Fresno California. He earned a B.A. in Anthropology and an M.S. in Geology at CSU Fresno, before earning a PhD in Geoscience from Boise State University in Idaho. Robin returned to the Central Valley first as a post-doc and now as the Technical Director of the Stable Isotope Ecosystems Laboratory Of UC Merced. In this role he helps students and faculty succeed in their research.
Robins own research focuses on the ecology of Cenozoic mammals through the lens of Stable Isotope Analysis and geochronology. He uses these techniques to investigate how the ecology of extinct mammals has changed geographically and temporally on time scales of thousands to millions of years.
We hope you'll join us! 🎃
Kind regards,
Enviro-lunch coordinators Anna Jurusik and Teamrat Ghezzehei, PhD.
ESS-190 coordinators Justin Yeakel, PhD., Jorge Armando Montiel Molina, PhD., and Carolin Frank, PhD.
P.S. Thank you so much to our last speaker, Dr. Zhi Wang of CSU Fresno for his wonderful talk, "The Dew""!

What: An informal and collegial session where faculty, visiting scholars, postdoctoral researchers, staff, and students have the opportunity to discuss their past and/or current research, and more. This year we welcome 80 undergraduate students enrolled in ESS-190 to join the conversation! Blockedhttps://soilphysics.ucmerced.edu/envirolunch.htmlBlocked (website under construction, please pardon any errors)
When: Mondays 12:00p-1:15 pm (PST)
Where: We will host Enviro-Lunch virtually via ZOOM this semester
Who: Our audience typically spans across natural sciences from faculty, students, and staff, but also attracts engineers, social scientists, and more.
How: A ~30-40 min for presentation with ~15-20 min for Q&A/discussion over Zoom. This year we are coordinating with ESS-190, an undergraduate seminar series that will interface with the seminar. (note: only ESS-190 students will meet in person)
