Dr. Jadson D. P. Bezerra

Abstract. Brazil is the largest country in South America and has one of the most incredible biodiversity. However, similar to other countries, the Brazilian fungal diversity is still an incredible subject that needs to be studied and protected before ‘extinction’. During this talk, we'll show some experience of conducting scientific projects aimed to discover part of the Brazilian fungal diversity mainly associated with plants (as endophytes) and recent studies of life ‘living in the dark’ in environments like tropical caves. Fungi are the past, present and future of the life in a planet in continuous changes!

About Dr. Jadson D.P. Bezerra. Dr. Bezerra received his Bachelor in Biology in 2010, Master of Science in 2013, and his PhD in 2016 in Fungal Biology in one of the most traditional and old Mycological Institution in Brazil, at the former Institute of Mycology of the University of Recife (IMUR) [currently Department of Mycology, Fungal Biology Post-Graduate Program, Federal University of Pernambuco, Recife, Brazil] founded by Augusto Chaves Batista in 1954. Trained at the URM culture collection (WDCM 604, Recife, Brazil) and at the Westerdijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute (Utrecht, The Netherlands) in several fungal groups with emphasis on Ascomycota, his focus centers mainly on fungi isolated as endophytes and phytopathogens. Currently, he serves as an Associate Professor at the Instituto de Patologia Tropical e Saúde Pública (IPTSP) of the Federal University of Goiás (UFG), Goiânia, Brazil.

We hope you'll join us!

Kind regards,
Enviro-lunch coordinators Anna Jurusik and Teamrat Ghezzehei, PhD.
ESS-190 coordinators Jorge Armando Montiel Molina, PhD., Carolin Frank, PhD., and Justin Yeakel, PhD.

P.S. Thank you so much to our last speaker, Dr. Jon P. Rebman of the San Diego Natural History Museum, for his engaging talk, "Lost, Rediscovered, and Extinct Plants of the Baja California Region"!

This year we welcome 80 undergraduate students enrolled in ESS-190 to join the conversation! https://soilphysics.ucmerced.edu/envirolunch.html<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/soilphysics.ucmerced.edu/envirolunch.html__;!!DZ3fjg!_cxaM91btptMGOIdckdP0yK2VWD18dbs_kPpkRQLR3FZmy83nHN6kQrTlBj8kgQyYhRhRGMvQcf8lPfl6L6Jqq1qdg$> (website under construction, please pardon any errors)

When: Mondays 12:00p-1:15 pm (PST)

Where: We will host Enviro-Lunch virtually via ZOOM this semester

Who: Our audience typically spans across natural sciences from faculty, students, and staff, but also attracts engineers, social scientists, and more.

How: A ~30-40 min for presentation with ~15-20 min for Q&A/discussion over Zoom. This year we are coordinating with ESS-190, an undergraduate seminar series that will interface with the seminar. (note: only ESS-190 students will meet in person)
