Abstract: Food security and environmental sustainability face grand challenges, and one of the key challenges is lacking accurate, timely, scalable, and cost-effective approaches for agriculture monitoring. Conventional ground-truthing approaches heavily relying on field sampling are inefficient and hardly applicable to monitor agroecosystem variables (crop traits, soil properties, and farming management practices) for every field across regions. To mitigate this challenge, we developed an AI-empowered cross-scale sensing framework to integrate proximal sensing, airborne hyperspectral imaging, and satellite Earth observation to accurately quantify high-resolution agroecosystem variables. This framework leveraged advanced deep learning, soil-canopy radiative transfer modeling, and their hybrid physics-guided machine learning to exploit hyperspectral remote sensing data to quantitatively estimate various agroecosystem variables. This cross-sensing framework can significantly advance our capability on agricultural monitoring to provide big data to facilitate agricultural stakeholders for adaptive management and policymaking.
Biography: Dr. Sheng Wang is a Research Assistant Professor at Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences (NRES) and a Research Scientist at Agroecosystem Sustainability Center (ASC), Institute for Sustainability, Energy, and Environment (iSEE), University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). Before he joined UIUC, he got his Ph.D. degree from Technical University of Denmark in 2019. He has published 30+ papers in top scientific journals, and serves as PI or Co-PI for federal, state and university grants. Dr. Wang’s research develops novel ground-airborne-satellite cross-scale sensing technology with process-based models and data-driven algorithms to quantify crop traits, soil properties and farming practices. His research aims to advance the understanding of key ecohydrological processes across spatial and temporal scales in managed and natural ecosystems. He also provides stakeholders with accurate, timely and actionable data to improve agroecosystem management for food security and environmental sustainability.
We hope you’ll join us!
Kind Regards,
Enviro-lunch coordinators Anna Jurusik and Teamrat Ghezzehei, PhD.
ESS-190 coordinators Justin Yeakel, PhD., Jorge Armando Montiel Molina, PhD., and Carolin Frank, PhD.
