Title: Deciphering spatio-temporal patterns and using reactive transport
models to improve process understanding

Abstract: Carbon and nitrogen fluxes in soils and groundwater are critical
components of global biogeochemical cycles and yet, these dynamics are
difficult to predict because of the presence of multiple sources and sinks
as well as several processes that affect their uptake and release.
Currently, one of the biggest impediments to developing a robust predictive
understanding of these fluxes under current and future climate is an
incomplete knowledge of spatial heterogeneity and lack of sampling at
timescales over which carbon and nutrients are removed, retained, and/or
transported. Reactive transport models can be beneficial tools to overcome
these constraints and untangle the multiple processes that control the fate
and transport of carbon and nitrogen in such environments.

In this seminar, I will present (1) newly developed strategies to
interrogate spatially and temporally diverse datasets to improve current
understanding of controls on C and N dynamics, (2) model-data integration
to incorporate this understanding into reactive transport models, and (3)
use reactive transport models to predict system evolution under future
climate and mitigation strategies. The flexibility and value of these
approaches will be demonstrated using real-world applications that focus on
identifying controls on (1) carbon cycling in a floodplain aquifer along
the Colorado River, (2) nitrogen cycling in an agricultural setting in
Modesto, California, and (3) negative net emissions under enhanced
weathering. The seminar will conclude with a discussion of the
possibilities to advance the use of reactive transport models and future
research opportunities therein.

Bhavna Arora is a Research Scientist in the Energy Geosciences Division at
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. She currently serves as the lead for
a newly launched Carbon Removal and Mineralization Program. With a Ph.D. in
Geoscience from Texas A&M University, her research has focused on advancing
predictive understanding of biogeochemical processes in heterogeneous
porous media, with the overarching goal of quantifying the impacts of
climate and land use changes on ecosystem functioning.
