Hello, all!

Please join us TODAY from 1:30p-2:30p PST as we welcome our speaker Paige Stanley, Ph.D. candidate in the Dept of Environmental Science, Policy & Management at University of California Berkley!*

Details on Paige’s talk below!!

Title: Understanding the impacts of grazing management on climate change and rangeland health: a socio-ecological approach

Abstract: Globally, rangelands are among the largest ecosystems, covering an estimated 45% of the Earth’s terrestrial surface and holding ~20% of the world’s soil organic carbon (C) stock. However, these ecosystems have lost a significant amount of their C reservoir due to overgrazing and are also increasingly threatened by fragmentation and conversion to cropland. In this talk, I’ll introduce the core pillars of my current work: 1) Characterizing the spatial heterogeneity of soil C in rangelands to inform the improved design of soil C monitoring, 2) Introduce a novel method of grazing management termed “adaptive multi-paddock grazing” - a grazing method hypothesized to increase soil C sequestration as well as rancher livelihoods. I discuss my work trying to understand its above (vegetation shifts) and below ground (soil C) impacts. 3) I also introduce the socio-political aspects of my work in these systems to better understand the drivers and barriers of ranchers grazing specifically for soil health outcomes.

“I'm a PhD candidate in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management at the University of California, Berkeley working under Drs. Timothy Bowles and Lynn Huntsinger. I received her Masters of Animal Science at the Michigan State University. The long-term goal of my research is to understand how grazing on rangelands can help to increase soil carbon and mitigate climate change while restoring landscape health and rancher livelihoods. Specifically, my current dissertation research aims to combine knowledge about animal behavior, grazing ecology, soil science, and rancher decision making to increase soil carbon sequestration on rangelands in California. I am particularly interested in the use of adaptive multi-paddock (AMP) grazing by ranchers to sequester soil carbon, its impacts on soil carbon persistence, and the mechanisms behind this process. Core to my work is centering ranchers throughout the research process, ensuring that my research contributes to solving their on-the-ground challenges.”

*Please note the correction on Paige’s credentials from our previous announcement, which said incorrectly that Paige was at UC Davis and in the “Sustainable Livestock and Agroecology ‘lab,’ the latter instead being her major.

We’ll see you there!
