Title:
Locally produced wood biochar in the US Northwest: influence on soil nitrogen and phosphorus dynamics
Abstract:
Producing wood biochar from timber harvest residues and applying it to nearby soils represents a means of addressing fuel management in the western US while providing an innovative approach to potentially improve soil fertility and plant productivity. Using a series of lab and field experiments established in Washington and Montana, my research is to understand the influence of locally produced wood biochar on soil nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) dynamics at agricultural, rangeland, and forest ecosystems of the Northwestern US. Several research topics that will be covered in my talk include:
1) Responses of soil N and P pools and fluxes, microbial communities, and crop productivity to short-term wood biochar addition at small-scale organic farms of the Pacific Northwest
2) Use of wood biochar with or without manure on soils of a semi-arid semi-natural rangeland ecosystem in western Montana
3) Rotational cattle grazing and wood biochar interact to influence rangeland soil and grass nutrient dynamics
4) Influence of biochar addition on forest soils exposed to fire retardant chemicals at the US Inland Northwest

Dr. Gao is a postdoctoral scholar at Oregon State University. She received a PhD in Forest & Conservation Sciences from the University of Montana. She is a soil scientist and ecosystem ecologist, broadly interested in understanding the functions of pyrogenic carbon in soil carbon and nutrient cycling in natural and managed ecosystems.
Best regards,
KJ, Manisha, and Anna
