Hello all,
Join us TODAY in kicking off the The Envio-Lunch seminar series, held every Thursday 12p-1p PST, as we welcome Shane Franklin from U of Delaware. Shane is a Ph.D. candidate in the Water Science and Policy program at the University of Delaware and is advised by Dr. Yan Jin and today he will talk about the role of preferential flow paths in biogeochemical cycling of nutrients.
We look forward to seeing you there! Details below!

Title:
Preferential flow plays an unknown role in the carbon cycle
Abstract:
Preferential flow refers to the uneven infiltration of water through soil, where a portion of the soil matrix is bypassed. Primary interest in preferential flow has largely dealt with contaminant transport and modelling approaches, but interestingly, these moisture highways play a role in biogeochemical cycling as well.Preferential flow paths have been found to contain higher concentrations of carbon, nitrogen, and microbial biomass, but the implications of this have not been fully explored. Additionally, preferential flow paths show temporal stability, meaning they are reactivated over time. We will dive into the biogeochemical properties of preferential flow paths and discuss their impact on carbon cycling as well as their potential to be used to upscale biogeochemical heterogeneity in soil.
