Hello all,

This Thursday (3/5), Alex Leven, UC Merced alumni, is visiting us to share
his research at Furgo Consultants. Please join us at SRE 475 (12-1 pm)

*Title:*

A Day in the Life of an Engineer in Private Industry

*Abstract:*

Engineering in the world of private industry is a broad and varied field
with many different directions for careers. Many positions in the industry
ask for a diverse set of skills and flexibility. Environmental engineering
projects often include working on characterizing and remediating dry
cleaners, metal plating plants, and other areas affected by heavy industry
while geotechnical engineering often assists with development of new or
existing construction work. Mercury Cleaners is an example of a
long-standing project that has employed a variety of methods for
remediation and combines geotechnical and environmental engineering
methods. The aim of the project is to eventually redevelop the site by
reducing concentration of chemicals of concern (tetrachloroethene (PCE) and
its breakdown byproducts and various petroleum hydrocarbons) to regulatory
levels. In order to accomplish this, Fugro has used techniques such as
electrical resistance heating (ERH), microbial injections, and soil vapor
extraction (SVE) techniques. Two and a half years after the end of the
widespread injection and ERH treatment programs, PCE concentrations were
reduced by three orders of magnitude in the source area and two orders of
magnitude in the distal plume and the size of the plume has been
dramatically reduced.

Alex Leven is a Senior Staff Engineer at Fugro Consultants based in
Sacramento. He graduated from UC Merced with a MS degree in Environmental
Systems in 2017 where he conducted research in the O’Day lab on novel
methods for mercury remediation using manganese oxides. In his
post-academic career, he conducts site investigations for environmental and
geotechnical projects throughout California. His previous projects have
included work on dry cleaners, environmental site assessments, liquefaction
surveys, and geophysical studies. He continues his work in remediation
primarily focused on chlorinated solvents in groundwater and mitigating
human health risks from vapor intrusion.
