Using advanced techniques to understand phosphorus biogeochemistry
in a changing climate

Global environmental change models state that temperate ecosystems will serve as a carbon (C) sink as atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration continues to increase. However, any realized increased in C storage will also require increases in the availabilities of key nutrients, such as nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). Our understanding of P transformations in the soil is complicated due to the complexity of P species and their varying bioavailability. My research seeks to understand how climate change will impact the biogeochemical cycling of P. Come learn about some of the novel techniques I use, including 31P nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES), to characterize how soil P in the Southern Sierra Nevada and White Mountains are altered by climate and the implications for vegetation.

Bio: I am a PhD Candidate here at UC Merced and I love learning and playing with soil! Specifically, I enjoy studying phosphorus biogeochemistry and how it is impacted by changes in climate. In my free time I like to get my hands dirty by making ceramics, kayaking, and camping.
