Hello Everyone,
Please join us on Today for this week's Enviro-Lunch talk by Martha Kandziora, at 12-1pm in Room SE2 Room 302
Why are there so many species of Erica ?
[cid:5d79c7d0-407f-433b-98c9-ea3df6876bf0]
Erica is one of the largest genera of angiosperm and extremely species-rich in the Cape Florstic Region. Species are the outcome of evolution and adaptation. I will first review the processes playing a role in speciation before presenting our research. To understand why there are so many species of Erica, I investigate together with others, the speciation and diversification processes of the genus. We found that increases in speciation rate seem to be related with rare long-distance dispersal to ecological dissimilar areas.
Bio: The key motivation for my research is to understand what drives speciation and how biodiversity is maintained, with a focus on the roles of spatial, historical and ecological processes. Currently I am a Postdoctoral Fellow in the McTavish lab (UC Merced) where I program a tool to automatically update phylogenies. Before coming here, I received my doctoral degree at the University of Mainz - Germany, where I investigated the evolution and biogeography of the large genus Senecio.
When: Today, 12pm – 1pm
Where: SE2 Room 302
Coffee will be provided, please bring your own mugs.
We look forward to seeing you,
Jing & Jennifer
