Hello Everyone,
Please join us for a talk Today. Oct. 4 by Dr. Ryan Bart, 12-1pm in Room SE2-302.

Talk Title:
Feedbacks between vegetation change and hydrology in the Sierra Nevada

[cid:image002.jpg at 01D45BC7.E0791C40]

Abstract:
Vegetation across the Sierra Nevada is in transition. More severe droughts are increasing forest mortality vulnerability, altered wildfire regimes are changing forest fire severity and recovery patterns, and higher temperatures are provoking an upslope shift for many Sierra vegetation communities. These changes come on top of forest management legacies that have increased the density of many Sierra forests to levels that have not been observed historically. Each of these vegetation changes has direct consequences on the hydrology of the Sierra Nevada, affecting processes such as interception, evapotranspiration and streamflow. However, quantifying the effect of vegetation change remains challenging due to the tight coupling of vegetation, disturbances and hydrology in the Sierra Nevada and their associated nonlinearities and threshold behaviors. In this talk, I will discuss my research to disentangle the feedbacks between vegetation change and hydrology in order to better understand how water resources in the Sierra Nevada may change under climate change. Specifically, I will explore the hydrologic effects of tree-to-shrub type conversion, forest fuel treatments, and changes in wildfire regimes.

Bio:
Ryan Bart is an ecohydrologist who examines the links between hydrology, vegetation and disturbances under different climate regimes and management practices. He is particularly interested in understanding how wildfire and forest mortality lead to changes in forest composition/structure and the implication of these changes on water resources. His work involves examining complex coupled-systems using both mechanistic and statistical models, as well as remote sensing and geospatial data. Ryan received his Ph.D. in 2014 in Geography from a joint doctoral program between the University of California, Santa Barbara and San Diego State University. He is currently a postdoctoral researcher with the Sierra Nevada Research Institute at the University of California, Merced, having previously worked as a postdoc at the University of California, Berkeley and the University of California, Santa Barbara.
