Title:
Insights to nitrogen cycling and climate change in Rocky Mountain forests using stable isotope analysis of lake sediments
Abstract:
How do nutrient cycling dynamics change with ecological succession? What is the interaction between past climate change and hydrological processes? These questions are often addressed with stable isotope analysis in modern and paleo-ecological studies. This biogeochemical technique acts as a natural tracer for chemical, biological, and physical processes, which can be recorded for hundreds to million of years within lake core sediments. I will present evidence of nitrogen cycling changes during climate-driven afforestation with a case study from the Rocky Mountains. In addition, I will introduce compound specific isotope analysis of leaf wax biomarkers, which is a novel technique that yields insight into processes and mechanisms related to source, preservation, and physiology.
Bio:
Sora is an assistant professor at in the Life and Environmental Science Dept. at UC Merced who describes herself as an interdisciplinary scientist who dabbles at the intersection of physiology, geochemistry, and ecology. Many of her research projects track how organisms respond to environmental change through time or across space. Her primary tool is stable isotope analysis, which has a wide range of applications. Two systems of interest to me are sharks and terrestrial ecosystems.
When: 11/1 Thursday, 12pm – 1pm
Where: SE2-302
Coffee will be provided, please bring your own mugs.
We look forward to seeing you,
