Measuring and Modeling Greenhouse Gas Exchange in Restored Wetlands

Abstract:
For the past 5 years I have focused on measuring and modeling greenhouse gas emissions (CO2 and CH4) from restored wetlands in California, including the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and San Francisco Bay. In my talk I will present the biogeochemical model I developed to predict greenhouse gas exchange in restored wetlands in California, with implications for the California Cap and Trade Market. I will also present recent measurement and modeling work in rice fields and restored tidal wetlands in the Delta and the San Francisco Bay. Finally, I will discuss ecosystem exchange measurements of the stable carbon isotopes of CO2 and how we can use these data to improve partitioning algorithms and estimations of gross primary productivity at the ecosystem scale.

Bio:
Patty’s background is in ecology and biogeochemistry, with an emphasis on trace gas measurements. She received a B.S. in Ecology, Evolution and Marine Biology from UC Santa Barbara and a PhD in Biology from University of Virginia. Her first postdoc position was at UC Riverside with Darrel Jenerette and David Grantz focusing on ecosystem and soil gas fluxes of CO2, H2O and NOx in a high temperature agroecosystem. She then did a postdoc at UC Berkeley with Dennis Baldocchi on greenhouse gas emissions from degraded peatlands and restored wetlands in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.
