*Physiological genetics and environmental associations to aridity across
the range of ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa)*



*Abstract*: Ongoing global changes in temperatures and precipitation
patterns are expected to result in greater water stress on trees in many
areas, which may lead to increasing tree mortality. Ponderosa pine (*Pinus
ponderosa*) is an ecologically and economically important tree species with
a broad distribution in the western USA, which has been experiencing
elevated mortality in many parts of California due to the recent severe
drought. The aims of this proposal are: 1) to identify what genes in P.
ponderosa are associated with spatial variation in aridity and 2) to test
which physiological traits are involved in drought tolerance, and what
genetic loci are associated with those traits. I will combine genotype
association approaches with greenhouse experiments to achieve these aims.
Understanding the traits conferring drought tolerance in seedlings and the
genetic loci underlying them is key to understanding the responses of
forests to climate change populations. This study has relevance to forest
management and conservation, such as selecting proper seed sources for
restoration and plantations.
