*Mean annual temperature shapes N cycling and fine root nutrient foraging
across a Hawaiian tropical elevation gradient*

*Abstract*: Increasing mean annual temperature (MAT) due to global climate
change has been shown to drive carbon (C) cycling and primary production in
a range of forest ecosystems. The mechanisms underlying this relationship
are not well resolved, but are likely related to changes in belowground
resource availability and forest nutrient limitation. We examined potential
mechanisms across a 5.2°C tropical montane wet forest elevation/MAT
gradient on the island of Hawaii. Our results suggest that nitrifier
communities respond to increasing MAT in ways which increase N
bioavailability, and potentially lead to increased phosphorus demand at
higher MAT.

*Biography*: Suzanne studies how changing environmental conditions affect
the cycling and availability of nutrients to terrestrial plant communities,
and aims to understand how these nutrient dynamics feedback to the fates of
terrestrial carbon. She currently focus on how temperature affects
microbial-community and ecosystem nitrogen and carbon dynamics across
