Dear all,

Please support our community in Earth and environmental sciences by
attending our weekly events. This week's speaker in our Enviro-lunch brown
bag seminar series will be:

*Dr. Caitlin Hicks Pries*

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

Digging Deeper: The Vulnerability of Soil Organic Carbon to Climate Change

Soil organic matter stores ~3000 Pg C, about four times the amount of
carbon as is currently in Earth’s atmosphere. As rising temperatures
increase microbial activity, some of this carbon is at risk of being
respired to the atmosphere, creating a positive feedback to climate change.
To estimate the magnitude of this feedback we need to understand how
mechanisms controlling soil carbon decomposition change throughout the soil
profile and how these mechanisms respond to warming. Here I present results
from several experiments examining how mechanisms controlling soil carbon
decomposition change with depth. The understanding from these experiments
is then applied to one of the first experiments warming a whole mineral
soil profile *in situ*.

Where: SE2-302

When: Thursday (March 23th, from 12-1:30PM)

We look forward to seeing you,
