<p style="margin:0in; font-family:"Aptos",sans-serif; font-size:12pt">Description: For playing music, we rely on a sense of time, balancing between internal and external timing processes for successful prediction, real-time monitoring, and adjustment.
Using simple metronome listening tasks, my studies have shown how the brain manages an internal sense of beat and meter, and the anticipation of upcoming tempo changes - involving the auditory cortex and motor system areas. Also, we could use beat-related
neural activities to monitor musical training effects in older adults and chronic stroke survivors. Furthermore, I will discuss a recent study showing individual differences in their sense of beat when listening to loosely-coupled multiple metronomes.

Acoustics. Takako grew up in Japan, playing music, drawing comics by hand, and making anime films. After earning degrees in Electrical Engineering from Waseda University in Tokyo and a Ph.D. in Physiology from the National Institute for Physiological Sciences
in Okazaki, she moved to Toronto, Canada, for post-doctoral work. Using non-invasive measures of human brainwaves with EEG and MEG, her research investigates music perception and cognition. Recent topics include timing processing, joint improvisation, hip-hop
rhyme perception, auditory and multisensory perception in cochlear implant users.
