Kai Lepley of NREL will talk about
“Precision irrigation in Dryland Agrivoltaic Systems”
Abstract: Agriculture is the primary use of freshwater, and agrivoltaics has proven to be a useful solution for conserving soil moisture in arid environments. Here, we show the first results of using precision irrigation in a dryland agrivoltaic system to measure potential water savings, water use efficiency, and crop performance. We discuss crop photosynthesis, precision irrigation, and plant functional traits to provide a state-of-knowledge overview of dryland agrivoltaic systems.

Bio: Kai Lepley is a researcher at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. He leverages ecology-driven systems thinking and data-driven science to imagine, model, and test climate-resilient land uses for food, energy, and water security. A background in ecology, natural resources management, climate science, and data-driven analysis complement industry experience to support his holistic approach to land use and renewable energy problem solving. His work with the InSPIRE team focuses on collaboratively developing modeling capabilities for agrivoltaic systems and performing targeted and broad-scale analyses to advance our understanding of agrivoltaics design and implementation in the U.S. and abroad.
